The unit price calculator compares two products by dividing each package price by its quantity. It identifies the lower cost per selected unit and the percentage saving relative to the more expensive option.
How to use this calculator
Enter each product's total price and quantity using the same quantity unit. Choose items, weight, or volume as appropriate. Do not compare grams directly with milliliters unless you have converted using reliable density information.
Formula & calculation method
Unit price = package price / package quantityThe lower unit price is the better value on price alone. Percentage saving is the difference between higher and lower unit prices divided by the higher unit price, multiplied by 100. Equal unit prices are reported as a tie.
Worked example
A 5 package containing 500 grams costs 0.01 per gram. An 8 package with 900 grams costs about 0.00889 per gram, making the second cheaper per unit despite its higher package price.
Why this is useful
Side-by-side results help compare different package sizes without mental arithmetic. Percentage savings complement the unit prices and show how meaningful the difference is.
Limitations to keep in mind
Lowest unit price does not account for quality, waste, expiry, storage, brand preference, coupons, deposits, or shipping. Quantities must measure the same thing and use the same unit for a valid comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is the larger package always cheaper per unit?
No. Promotions and pricing strategies vary, so calculate both rather than assuming bulk packaging is better value.
Can I compare grams and kilograms?
Not directly. Convert both quantities to the same unit first, then select that unit in the calculator.
How is percentage saving calculated?
It compares the unit-price difference with the higher unit price, not with the total package price.
